The Montessori curriculum helps to develop

independence, concentration, co-ordination, self esteem,

confidence and social skills.

Areas of Montessori Curriculum

Practical Life

The practical life is the foundation for the Montessori

method.  Practical life is about learning everyday life

skills, so that children can learn to do things for

themselves and to be independent.  They are tasks that

are done daily, they are familiar to the child, as they

would see them done at home.  Children love to imitate

adults, they want to do whatever your doing, whether it's

putting the shopping away or sweeping the floor.  Things

that we would see as housework or chores the children

see them differently, they see them as fun, and more

importantly they enjoy doing them, again and again.

Sensorial

It is through our senses that we learn, through seeing,

hearing, smelling, tasting and touching things that we

learn.  We start doing this from the day we are born and

this will continue for the rest of our lives, there is always

something new out there to see, to hear, to taste to

touch.

Maths

Children are introduced to numbers from a very early age,

how old are you?  How many fingers/eyes/toes etc do you

have?  In the Montessori classroom we use concrete

materials so the children are introduced to mathematical

concepts.  There are so many different materials in

montessori maths, enough to keep all children and at

every level interested.

Language

From a young age children copy everything adults do,

they want to do what we do, so why should language be

any different?  Children take in everything that's around

them, so it's very important that they are exposed to as

much language as possible from an early age.  Children

start to pay attention to language from a very young age,

they are aware and take in everything in their

surroundings.

Culture

The Culture modules cover so much, it's where the

children learn about plants, animals, geography, history,

science and the arts.  There are so many different

materials available for the children to be introduced to

and to learn more about the subjects.  Culture is an

important and interesting module for the children to

learn, children are introduced to these subjects so they

can have a better understanding of their environment and

their surroundings.
